1999 AVETRA Conference
Quality and diversity in VET research
Storey Hall, RMIT, Melbourne, Victoria | 11-12 February 1999

OVERVIEW

The 1999 AVETRA conference was held on 11 and 12 February 1999 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s Storey Hall, Swanston Street, in the heart of Melbourne.

The conference provided an opportunity to engage with and reflect on the diversity of research conducted in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

It aimed to reflect on the nature and character of VET research conducted by a diverse range of researchers.

THEMES

The conference sought to map and describe research conducted by universities, TAFE Institutes, other VET providers, Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs), private consultants, unions and teachers, trainers and students to examine the implications of such diversity on:

  • research training
  • research funding policy
  • research quality and quality of outcomes
  • research as a means of informing policy and practice.

In particular, papers addressed the following questions:

  • What constitutes quality research?
  • In what ways can the value, usefulness and utility of research be established?
  • In what ways can research, and especially VET research, contribute to the generation of new
  • knowledge and theory?
  • In what ways can research contribute to broadening the VET policy agenda?
  • In what ways can research meet the diverse needs of research clients?
  • In what ways can research develop collaborative structures to support the multiple interests of researchers?
